11 homeless after fire guts two Angoy’s Avenue houses

The fire scene on Wednesday

Eleven people are now homeless after a fire destroyed two houses at Timmers Dam, Angoy’s Avenue, and New Amsterdam Berbice on Wednesday morning.

Speaking with reporters in an interview, Rudolph Majeed disclosed that around 8:30 a.m. he was at home in his hammock while his wife was sitting in a chair when they heard the sound of burning dry grass.

Thereafter, he moved quickly and went upstairs to see if anything was amiss. “When I run upstairs the whole house catch afire. I run down and tell me wife and I hustle fuh ah bucket a water, but the water couldn’t even ah do…The fire take place so fast that we couldn’t even save anything,” Majeed related.

The New Amsterdam Fire was contacted but when firefighters arrived on the scene the Lot 671 and 672 houses were already destroyed.

According to Majeed, he was occupying the Lot 671 two-bedroom wooden house with his wife, son, daughter-in-law, and three grandchildren. He said his daughter, her husband, and their two children were occupying Lot 672.

Majeed, who is a carpenter, stated that they were operating a small grocery store, which was also destroyed by the blaze.

” Nobody couldn’t save nothing. Everything went fuh we; even we lil money we had, we couldn’t save that an all,” he revealed.

Majeed said they were contemplating their next move. He was unable to estimate their losses. Anyone who wishes to assist the two families can contact them at 643-9503.
