Eighty-four-year-old Moses Elias the former Head Master (HM) who perished in a tragic fire at Quamina Road, Beterverwagting (BV), East Coast Demerara (ECD), on March 22, 2024 at around 03: 30 hours allegedly died by suicide.

This is according to a police report. On March 22, at about 03:30 hours, whilst the police were on mobile patrol on the Beterverwagting Railway Embankment, ECD two males contacted the police and reported that a thief man was inside Moses house.

As a result, the police ranks went into the yard and called upon Moses, and they observed fire in the lower flat. The said ranks then used force to gained access to the western door, where they saw the former HM wearing a grey and black brief without any top and pants walking up the inside stairs with a five gallon bottle in his hands.

One of the officer with the assistance of the two males then managed to control the fire in the lower flat and while another rank give chase behind Moses, who went to the upper flat and set fire on a mattress and locked himself in the bathroom with the mention five gallon bottle which is suspected to be gasoline.

According to police the 84-year-old man began shouting at the policeman: “Life too hard” and started to scream for pain.

The entire building started to engulf in flames and the ranks, and others had to choose but to exited. The fire service was summoned, and the fire was later controlled and extinguished.

A search was conducted between the remains of the house, and the deceased body was charred, beyond recognition, police said. The EMT was summoned to the scene, and the deceased was pronounced dead by a doctor at the scene. Police said a further investigation into the matter is still ongoing.
