Guyana’s Oldest Resident Receives Gift of New Home from Generous Philanthropist
In a heartwarming gesture, Mr. Azruddin Mohamed expressed his deep emotions as he embarked on one of his most meaningful humanitarian endeavours yet – providing a new home for a woman who is believed to be Guyana’s oldest citizen.
The initiative began when Mr. Mohamed came across a poignant video on social media, depicting a family in Mashabo urgently seeking assistance to rebuild their home, which was at risk of collapsing due to severe weather conditions in the area. Without hesitation, Team Mohamed’s sprung into action.
During the construction process, Mr. Mohamed discovered that the beneficiary of this charitable act was none other than Lillian Elliot, who is set to celebrate her remarkable 115th birthday on July 31st. Born and raised in St. Monica along the Pomeroon River, Elliot has led a storied life, raising 11 children despite the loss of her husband at a young age.
Despite facing adversity, Elliot’s resilience shone through as she turned to farming to support her family. After falling ill with malaria decades ago, she relocated to Mashabo with her daughter, Norma Elstob, and her family. There, she continued to be a pillar of strength for her extensive family, which includes over 50 grandchildren and 100 great-grandchildren.
Affectionately known as “granny” in Mashabo, Elliot remains remarkably active and independent, despite being treated for hypertension. She is an active member of the Seventh-day Adventist church and enjoys simple pleasures like steam fish with boiled plantains.
In addition to the new home, Mr. Mohamed also established a small business for Elliot’s family to ensure her continued care and support. Today, he had the privilege of meeting Guyana’s oldest citizen in person, where she graciously shared her wisdom on longevity and health.
This heartfelt gesture not only provides Elliot with a safe and comfortable living environment but also serves as a testament to the power of compassion and generosity in transforming lives.
