President calls for Unity and Love at New Amsterdam Phagwah Celebration
President Dr. Irfaan Ali, accompanied by several government officials, joined hundreds of Guyanese in New Amsterdam, Region Six, to kick-start the eagerly awaited Holi (Phagwah) celebrations on Sunday.
Holi, also known as Phagwah in Guyana, is a vibrant Hindu festival symbolizing the victory of good over evil, often referred to as the Festival of Colours.
In a message emphasizing unity and love, President Ali highlighted the significance of colour in art and culture. He stated, “Colour is what lights art up, and if it’s the foundational element for celebrating history and culture, then it cannot be a reason for division.”
While Phagwah is known for its joyous traditions like the throwing of coloured powder and water, President Ali urged Guyanese to also reflect on the religious aspects of the festival and use the occasion to uplift others.
“This is what Holi does, it brings us together under the colourful banner of humanity, celebrating life, happiness, and the triumph of goodness over evil,” President Ali emphasized.
He encouraged individuals to reconsider their goals, especially during moments when cultural and religious beliefs unite us, emphasizing the importance of collective efforts to uplift each other.
Traditionally, Phagwah involves temple services, communal gatherings, and the symbolic burning of “Holika” the night before, representing the victory of good over evil in Hindu mythology.
President Ali’s call for unity and reflection resonated with attendees as they embraced the spirit of Phagwah and celebrated together as one community.
