The 49th Regional Security System (RSS) Council of Ministers kicked off on Friday, focusing on enhancing security and stability in Haiti. This important gathering, themed ‘Strength through Unity,’ is taking place at the Ramada Princess Hotel in Providence, East Bank Demerara.

Robeson Benn, the Home Affairs Minister and outgoing chair of the RSS, highlighted the crisis in Haiti, which worsened after the assassination of President Jovenel Moise in 2021. Since then, the nation has been grappling with escalating gang violence, pushing it deeper into turmoil.

Minister Benn stressed the need for a long-term strategy to address Haiti’s evolving security challenges and find lasting solutions. He emphasized the importance of protecting Haiti’s population, especially vulnerable groups like women and children, to prevent further chaos.

Benn underscored that peace, freedom, and development hinge on security. He expressed concern that failure to stabilize Haiti would reflect significant shortcomings. He noted ongoing discussions among the U.S., international partners, and CARICOM regarding a resolution for Haiti.

In summary, the 49th RSS Council of Ministers prioritizes bolstering security and stability in Haiti, recognizing the urgency of addressing the nation’s crisis through unified efforts and long-term strategies.
