Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum has confirmed that investigators, following the deaths of David Gomes and his mother, Elizabeth Gomes, committed by Akeem Wong, examined items found in Wong’s possession after he was fatally shot by members of the Joint Services.

Upon investigation, detectives discovered that Wong possessed a black Samsung Galaxy phone displaying a photograph of David Gomes. Further inspection revealed multiple videos and images of David Gomes, including official documents such as his national identification card and driver’s license. Two of the three SIM cards found with Wong were registered to David Gomes, while the other was registered with a foreign telephone company.

Wong had escaped from Mazaruni Prison on February 15, 2024, and had been on the run until he was shot dead by members of the Joint Services. He and another inmate were under supervision, performing labor duties when Wong went missing.

Wong, suspected of gruesomely chopping David and Elizabeth Gomes to death on March 8 at their Saxacalli home, reportedly approached the Gomes residence seeking food and directions. The six-year-old son of the victims recounted that Wong visited their home, requested food and directions, and later attacked his father with a cutlass. The child’s grandmother attempted to intervene but was also attacked.

The child managed to send a voice note for help using his father’s phone, alerting authorities to the incident. During the search for Wong, a member of the Joint Services was fatally shot by a colleague, leading to further investigation by the Guyana Police Force.

Wong was ultimately found and fatally shot by members of the Joint Services. Upon discovery, various items were recovered from the scene, including weapons, money, and personal belongings belonging to the victims.
