Heads of State Chandrikapersad Santokhi of Suriname and Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali of Guyana convened on Saturday, March 23, 2024, in Soesdyke, Guyana, to advance discussions on the construction of a bridge over the Corantijn/Corentyne River.

Accompanied by their respective Foreign Affairs, Finance, and Public Works ministers, the leaders delved into the technical and financial aspects of the initiative, following months of intensive consultations.

The proposed bridge, a critical link between the two neighboring nations, holds strategic significance not only for Suriname and Guyana but also for broader South American connectivity and regional integration efforts. The project aligns with the vision of trilateral cooperation between Suriname, Guyana, and Brazil.

During the meeting, Presidents Santokhi and Ali emphasized the historic and friendly relations between their countries and recognized the potential for both to emerge as key players in regional energy and food security.

The bridge is expected to facilitate the flow of people, boost agricultural cooperation, foster trade and investment, and promote tourism, contributing to sustainable economic growth for both populations.

Moving forward, the ministers will engage in discussions on pricing, technical aspects, financing, and operational modalities to ensure affordability and concessionality. Additionally, joint efforts will be made to establish a political and legal framework, commence the tendering process, and draft agreements for the bridge’s management.

Clear timelines have been established for these activities, with the ministers tasked with leading negotiations, gathering data, and providing regular progress reports to the Heads of State.

In a further demonstration of commitment to bilateral cooperation, President Santokhi and President Ali agreed to convene the Strategic Dialogue and Cooperation Platform in May 2024 to address other areas of strategic importance between the two nations.
