Commander of Regional Police Division 9, Senior Superintendent Raphael Rose, has confirmed that three girls, ages 5, 6 and 8, have allegedly drowned in a ‘fish pond’ in Massara Village, North Rupununi.
The three dead girls are: Nia Jeffery, 6, Michelle Jeffrey, 5, and Alicia Dorrick, 9.
Nia and Michelle are reportedly sisters, while Alicia is said to be their cousin.
A team of police officers was deployed to the scene. When the officers arrived at the tragic scene at Massara Village, in the North Rupununi, this evening they conducted an initial investigation.
During this investigation, it was revealed that three girls left their parents’ home and ventured to the Razor Grass pond in the village to swim.
Upon discovering their absence, their parents initiated a search, eventually leading them to the Razor Grass pond, where the bodies of the three girls were found floating in the water.
Villagers promptly responded to the alarm raised and assisted in retrieving the bodies. Toshao Lenny Moses was promptly notified, and a report was filed at the Annai Police Station.
The bodies of the three children are en route to the Lethem Regional Hospital.
