Five individuals sustained injuries this morning when the roof of Stabroek Market wharf suddenly collapsed, prompting an immediate halt to vending activities in the vicinity. Witnesses described a startling noise followed by the structure giving way, trapping some beneath the debris.
The collapse occurred at approximately 10:30 am, drawing emergency responders including firefighters to the scene. The affected area, situated near the market’s meat section and back entrance, has been cordoned off for safety.

Efforts to address the dilapidated state of the wharf are underway, with the Ministry of Public Works collaborating with the Mayor and City Council to clear the area and prevent further use until repairs are completed.
Home Affairs Minister Robeson Benn emphasized the importance of isolating the site and removing debris to prevent additional risks. Mayor of Georgetown, Alfred Mentore, highlighted the need for a long-term solution to ensure safety for coastguards, commuters, and vendors.
Minister Deodat Indar of the Public Works Ministry emphasized the fire hazard posed by the deteriorating structure, particularly considering that some individuals were residing there.
