U.S. Affirms Support for Guyana’s Sovereignty in Regional Security Talks

On Wednesday, the topic of Regional Security and Stability was addressed in a phone conversation between U.S Principal Deputy National Security Advisor Jon Finer and President Irfaan Ali of Guyana, who also serves as the current Chairman of CARICOM.
According to a statement from the White House, the discussion involved plans to strengthen the relationship between Guyana and the United States, emphasizing the U.S.’ firm support for Guyana’s sovereignty. The United States has a history of supporting Guyana, particularly in its territorial dispute with neighboring Venezuela. Additionally, the U.S. has conducted security exercises in Guyana and provided support through high-ranking officials from the US Southern Command to the Guyana Defence Force.
During the call, Mr. Finer also commended Guyana’s leadership as the current Chair of CARICOM. Both parties emphasized the need for increased international support for Haitian-led efforts and the Multinational Security Support mission to aid in restoring security and facilitating free and fair elections in Haiti.
President Ali and the U.S. official also discussed mutual priorities such as energy security and addressing climate change.
