In a collaborative effort between the Customs Anti Narcotic Unit (CANU) and the Guyana Defense Force (GDF) Coast Guard, a significant narcotics interception unfolded yesterday, March 29, 2024. The operation, which was carried out at Vergenoegen, Essequibo-Island West Demerara, resulted in the apprehension of two Spanish nationals aboard a go-fast vessel.

According to a statement from CANU officials, the joint operation targeted the suspicious vessel, leading to its interception by vigilant ranks. Upon conducting a thorough search of the vessel, authorities uncovered a substantial quantity of narcotics concealed within, along with additional contraband including fuel and other suspected smuggled items.

While specific details regarding the quantity and of narcotics seized have not been disclosed, it has been confirmed that it is cocaine and the significant quantity indicates that it is connected to a potential large-scale drug trafficking operation.

CANU authorities confirmed that the two occupants of the vessel, both identified as Spanish nationals, are currently in custody. The identities of the apprehended individuals have not been released pending ongoing investigations.
