The body of 31-one-year-old Derick Barry of formerly of Amelia’s Ward Linden, was found floating face down in a creek along the Linden-Soesdyke Highway on Tuesday, April 02, 2024.

This was revealed by his mother, 47-year-old Tracey Peters, during a brief interview with the news on Wednesday (Today).

According to Peters on Tuesday morning, she received a call informing her that her son was found dead.

The woman said that after she received the tragic news, she went to the police station to enquire how her son died.

Peters disclosed that police reportedly told her that they received a call from a cleaner at the creek where her son was found floating. Police after receiving the information, went over to the creek where they fished out the body of the man.

His body was then examined, and what appears to be several bite marks from piranhas were seen on his body. Barry’s remains were then transported to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, where it remains and is awaiting a post-mortem examination, which is expected to be done on Friday.

Peters who reside in Amelia’s Ward Linden said: “They (police) said I have to wait till the post mortem conduct on Friday, then we will know how he (Barry) died. Them ain’t seh how long or nothing his body was in the creek for before they find it. They just say that yesterday morning, they got a call from the cleaner that cleaned the area. The cleaner would’ve seen the body in the creek, and they ended up and called the police and the police went, and they retrieved the body from the creek. They said 6 o’clock, the cleaner find the body. Like pirai bite parts of his body, like he eyes, his lips, and other things.”

Peters said that the creek is located in the vicinity of Splashmins.

The woman said that she last saw her son two weeks ago at his workplace in Georgetown at Maggie’s Snackette. Barry reportedly worked in the kitchen and has been living in a rented apartment in Alberttown, Georgetown, for the past three years.

The woman described her son as a jovial and helpful person who loved to try new things.

“He (Barry) doesn’t have no children, and he ain’t got no wife, and he never told me anything about a girlfriend or nothing. He’s a jovial person. Anybody would want him around them because he’s always helpful, playful with children. He’s a real mannerly person.
